There are many occasions when an adult may want to change his or her name or change the name of a child.

Adult Name Change

Adult name changes are generally very simple. Some people are able to do it on their own without the assistance of an attorney. However, most people do not have the time to devote to the process, and find that hiring an attorney to complete their name change is a more effective use of their time and resources. Most name change cases can be completed in 60 days. If you have a criminal background you might be able to change your name, but the process is more complex and will probably take more time.

Name Change of Child

Sometimes a parent may with to change the name of his or her child. If the parents are married to each other, they must be in agreement and if the parents are not married the other parent must be given notice of the suit to change the name of his or her child. Further, if a child is 10 years of age or older, the child's written consent to the name change must be obtained.

In some instances, when a parent indicates a desire to change the name of his or her child, we find that what the parent is really wanting to do is have his or her spouse adopt the child.
